More Speed: Raiders Sign WR John Brown

After losing last year’s top wide receiver Nelson Agholor in free agency to the New England Patriots, the Las Vegas Raiders sign former Buffalo Bills wideout John Brown to a reported one-year $3.75 million contract.

The Las Vegas Raiders filled one of their needs at a skill position signing speedy former Buffalo Bills wide receiver John Brown to a one-year $3.75 million contract, that with incentives could be worth $5 million, according to Vic Tafur at The Athletic.

Brown caught 33 passes for 458 yards and three touchdowns for Buffalo last season after an injury-plagued season limited his playing time and productivity. Brown’s signing helps the Raiders replace Nelson Agholor who jetted to the Patriots in free agency last week. Brown was a 1,000-yard receiver in 2019 when he scored six touchdowns.

The Raiders sorely needed a veteran presence at wide receiver with the loss of Agholor – their leading wideout from a season ago. With young receivers Henry Ruggs III, Bryan Edwards, and Hunter Renfrow, the presence of the veteran is key for the young Raiders receiving room.

The signing of Brown commits the Raiders to over $3 million which is three times as much as they signed Agholor last season. With confidence in Ruggs and Edwards perhaps in flux, the Raiders were thought to be players in the Juju Smith-Schuster sweepstakes too, but Brown ends up being their acquisition at wide receiver as free agency kicked off officially today.

The Raiders still look to be active with veteran needs at safety and on the defensive line where they signed pass rushing specialist Yannick Ngoakue earlier this week. Reports Wednesday also link the Raiders to free agent DT Quinton Jefferson also formerly of the Bills.
